Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Year In Review
Wow, can you believe we`re almost done with this year! 2012 has been an exciting year for Keith Gamble Music. This year Keith Gamble Music introduced its Art House Gathering series, starting with our April 21, Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Bird, at the Phoenix Cafe' in Hazel Park, MI. Those in attendance joined me in celebrating the music of Charlie Parker, as I played Charlie Parker pieces, while guess were treated to coffee and cake. Our second gathering on August 11, was quite successful. Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night saw a larger audience, as I played and premiered first time performed and new avant-garde jazz works. Poetry Night also reunited me with urban folk poet Wardell Montgomery, Jr. Vocalist DeAngela McKinney as took to the stage.
Finishing our Art House Gathering series for 2012, is our Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering, on December 15, at the International Institute, in Detroit. Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering: Sarah Felton Art Exhibit will not take place. In preparing for the Sarah Felton Art Exhibit I discovered Sarah Felton is no longer an art major, but has changed her major to criminal justice. Of course I am happy for Sarah`s decision, and wish her well with great success, but Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering series is promoting active arts and cultural activities. Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering will feature my compositions performed by my jazz ensemble, Christmas songs sung by DeAngela McKinney, Christmas dinner, and of course, coffee and cake.
Those of you who attend my Christmas gathering will be treated to a post-bop jazz set list that include some special pieces I have composed. "Arrival of Shakan" is a piece dedicated to my wife - Patricia Gamble. Patricia has written comic strips that have appeared in Wayne State University`s South End newspaper back in the early 90`s called "Shakan - Zulu Warrior". "Arrival of Shakan" is dedicated to my wife`s important creative efforts. Earlier this month at the Rochester Hills Public Library, in Rochester, MI, my group and I performed "Talking". This composition received a lot of buzz, with people in the audience requesting to purchase a recording of this piece. "Talking" has not been recorded yet, but it is a piece in my repertoire. I will record "Talking" on my next CD.
Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering will feature the premiere performance of "Partnerships". You will want to be in the audience to hear this intricate post-bop jazz piece that has me playing flute."Partnerships" is a work you are sure to enjoy. We will end the evening with "Street Corner". Be ready to rock in your seats, on get on the floor and dance to this funk/fusion jazz composition I composed for the PC Jenkins play When Mama Cries Why?

Avant-Garde Jazz and Poetry: A Creative Tradition
My partner in crime and I have been busy of late. The partner in crime I am referring to is my friend, and former business partner Wardell Montgomery, Jr. Wardell and I were business and artistic partners of the performance poetry group Creative Tradition. Wardell and I are friends, and from time to time we will call each other to perform. Such was the case for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, and our performance at the U Detroit Cafe.
The Phoenix Cafe' in Hazel Park, MI was the site for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering; Poetry Night. I began our evening performance with three avant-garde jazz works, starting with "My Mind and Soul". My Mind and Soul is on the Creative Tradition CD "Do I Have To Live Like This?", and is used on the CD with Wardell Montgomery`s poem entitled Give Me Back My Mind. My Mind and Soul was perform as a saxophone solo piece without spoken word at my August 11 gathering, however, Wardell and I performed both spoken word and music at our August 15 U Detroit Cafe performance to a full house. My Mind and Soul is an interesting piece that is improvised off a pentatonic scale, and provides space for the saxophone to explore and extend. After My Mind and Soul, I performed my composition "For Sarah and Sarah". A composition of a lighter texture, For Sarah and Sarah is a set theory composition based upon the name of my mom, and a former clarinet student of mine who share in common the same name - SARAH. The melody was created from the spelling of the name. For Sarah and Sarah has a very interesting blues like quality, and has no improvisation. As someone had commented about For Sarah and Sarah - it starts with the listener seeing flames, and as the composition continues it becomes exciting, and smooth at the end.
I ended my performance with "At the Hill: For Jazz/Avant-Garde Solo Tenor Saxophone". Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, August 11, 2012 was special because this was the premiere night and performance for For Sarah and Sarah, while also the first time At the Hill was performed in order, and in the format and context the composition was composed. At the Hill is an avant-garde jazz work that is composed in four movements: I. In the Belly Of the Beast
II. Teachers
III.Oneness: Administrators
IV. Bipolar Conference
Each of the movements have been performed separately, for example, "In the Belly Of the Beast" has been performed with Creative Tradition, and used as a piece in combination with poetry. My motivation for composing At the Hill was because of my time spent, and experiences as a band director and music teacher at the Cherry Hill School of Performing Arts, in Inkster, MI. At the Hill is an exciting piece of work that is creating a buzz.
Wardell Montgomery, Jr. offers poetry that is a commentary to our lives in urban America. Wardell presented spoken word pieces from Do I Have to Live Like This?, and many other works. Wardell`s piece on domestic abuse is a powerful piece, and like many of his works, people cannot help but to engage in dialog that Wardell Montgomery brings to the fore. At both Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, and U Detroit Cafe' in Downtown Detroit, Wardell and I closed with Do I Have To Live Like This? Again, Wardell gives powerful commentary, and I provide free jazz background. At both places the audience is wired and alive as we ask - Do I Have To Live Like This?

KEITH GAMBLE`S ART HOUSE GATHERING: Poetry Night
August 11, 2012, at the Phoenix Cafe in Hazel Park, MI is the site for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night. This promises to be an exciting night. The evening will kick-off with me performing three of my avant-garde jazz pieces.
I will begin the evening with My Mind and Soul: For Solo Tenor Saxophone (Unaccompanied). I recorded My Mind and Soul with Creative Tradition in 2006, on our CD "Do I Have To Live Like This?" (track number 25 - Give Me Back My Mind, poetry by Wardell Montgomery). My Mind and Soul is an interesting piece with a retrograde of octaves and set theory.
At The Hill is an avant-garde jazz composition written in four movements. All four movements have been performed and recorded. I have performed In The Belly Of The Beast (1st movement of At The Hill) with my four piece group and Creative Tradition. Movements three and four have also been performed by Creative Tradition. Teachers is the second movement of At The Hill, and is actually a be-bop piece inside an avant-garde jazz composition. Continuum Jazz Ensemble has recorded "Teachers", but the recording has not been released. Although these movements have been performed separately with other groups, and myself, this performance will be the first time At The Hill: For Jazz/Avant-Garde Solo Tenor Saxophone has been performed with all four movements in order, and unaccompanied.
