Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Year In Review

Wow, can you believe we`re almost done with this year! 2012 has been an exciting year for Keith Gamble Music. This year Keith Gamble Music introduced its Art House Gathering series, starting with our April 21, Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Bird, at the Phoenix Cafe' in Hazel Park, MI. Those in attendance joined me in celebrating the music of Charlie Parker, as I played Charlie Parker pieces, while guess were treated to coffee and cake. Our second gathering on August 11, was quite successful. Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night saw a larger audience, as I played and premiered first time performed and new avant-garde jazz works. Poetry Night also reunited me with urban folk poet Wardell Montgomery, Jr. Vocalist DeAngela McKinney as took to the stage.

Finishing our Art House Gathering series for 2012, is our Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering, on December 15, at the International Institute, in Detroit. Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering: Sarah Felton Art Exhibit will not take place. In preparing for the Sarah Felton Art Exhibit I discovered Sarah Felton is no longer an art major, but has changed her major to criminal justice. Of course I am happy for Sarah`s decision, and wish her well with great success, but Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering series is promoting active arts and cultural activities. Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering will feature my compositions performed by my jazz ensemble, Christmas songs sung by DeAngela McKinney, Christmas dinner, and of course, coffee and cake.

Those of you who attend my Christmas gathering will be treated to a post-bop jazz set list that include some special pieces I have composed. "Arrival of Shakan" is a piece dedicated to my wife - Patricia Gamble. Patricia has written comic strips that have appeared in Wayne State University`s South End newspaper back in the early 90`s called "Shakan - Zulu Warrior". "Arrival of Shakan" is dedicated to my wife`s important creative efforts. Earlier this month at the Rochester Hills Public Library, in Rochester, MI, my group and I performed "Talking". This composition received a lot of buzz, with people in the audience requesting to purchase a recording of this piece. "Talking" has not been recorded yet, but it is a piece in my repertoire. I will record "Talking" on my next CD.

Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering will feature the premiere performance of "Partnerships". You will want to be in the audience to hear this intricate post-bop jazz piece that has me playing flute."Partnerships" is a work you are sure to enjoy. We will end the evening with "Street Corner". Be ready to rock in your seats, on get on the floor and dance to this funk/fusion jazz composition I composed for the PC Jenkins play When Mama Cries Why?

Looking forward to seeing you on December 15, 2012, at my Keith Gamble`s Christmas Art House Gathering, at the International Institute, at 111 E. Kirby, Detroit, MI. 48202. Tickets are $10.00 at the door, and $8.00 in advance. You can purchase advance tickets by going to Waltham Street Music Publishing at Paypal.

Post-Bop and Avant-Garde Jazz Saxophonist Keith Gamble: Avant-Garde Jazz and Poetry: A Creative Tradition

Avant-Garde Jazz and Poetry: A Creative Tradition

My partner in crime and I have been busy of late. The partner in crime I am referring to is my friend, and former business partner Wardell Montgomery, Jr. Wardell and I were business and artistic partners of the performance poetry group Creative Tradition. Wardell and I are friends, and from time to time we will call each other to perform. Such was the case for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, and our performance at the U Detroit Cafe.

The Phoenix Cafe' in Hazel Park, MI was the site for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering; Poetry Night. I began our evening performance with three avant-garde jazz works, starting with "My Mind and Soul". My Mind and Soul is on the Creative Tradition CD "Do I Have To Live Like This?", and is used on the CD with Wardell Montgomery`s poem entitled Give Me Back My Mind. My Mind and Soul was perform as a saxophone solo piece without spoken word at my August 11 gathering, however, Wardell and I performed both spoken word and music at our August 15 U Detroit Cafe performance to a full house. My Mind and Soul is an interesting piece that is improvised off a pentatonic scale, and provides space for the saxophone to explore and extend. After My Mind and Soul, I performed my composition "For Sarah and Sarah". A composition of a lighter texture, For Sarah and Sarah is a set theory composition based upon the name of my mom, and a former clarinet student of mine who share in common the same name - SARAH. The melody was created from the spelling of the name. For Sarah and Sarah has a very interesting blues like quality, and has no improvisation. As someone had commented about For Sarah and Sarah - it starts with the listener seeing flames, and as the composition continues it becomes exciting, and smooth at the end.

I ended my performance with "At the Hill: For Jazz/Avant-Garde Solo Tenor Saxophone". Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, August 11, 2012 was special because this was the premiere night and performance for For Sarah and Sarah, while also the first time At the Hill was performed in order, and in the format and context the composition was composed. At the Hill is an avant-garde jazz work that is composed in four movements: I. In the Belly Of the Beast
                                              II. Teachers
                                              III.Oneness: Administrators
                                              IV. Bipolar Conference
Each of the movements have been performed separately, for example, "In the Belly Of the Beast" has been performed with Creative Tradition, and used as a piece in combination with poetry. I also performed In the Belly Of the Beast with my four piece ensemble. "Oneness" and "Bipolar Conference" have also been performed separately as music for spoken word. "Teachers" is actually a be-bop piece within an avant-garde jazz composition that has been performed by Continuum Jazz Ensemble. But on August 11, these movements were performed in order, and unaccompanied for, and by the tenor saxophone as a solo work.
My motivation for composing At the Hill was because of my time spent, and experiences as a band director and music teacher at  the Cherry Hill School of Performing Arts, in Inkster, MI. At the Hill is an exciting piece of work that is creating a buzz.

Wardell Montgomery, Jr. offers poetry that is a commentary to our lives in urban America. Wardell presented spoken word pieces from Do I Have to Live Like This?, and many other works. Wardell`s piece on domestic abuse is a powerful piece, and like many of his works, people cannot help but to engage in dialog that Wardell Montgomery brings to the fore. At both Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night, and U Detroit Cafe' in Downtown Detroit, Wardell and I closed with Do I Have To Live Like This? Again, Wardell gives powerful commentary, and I provide free jazz background. At both places the audience is wired and alive as we ask - Do I Have To Live Like This?

KEITH GAMBLE`S ART HOUSE GATHERING: Poetry Night

August 11, 2012, at the Phoenix Cafe in Hazel Park, MI is the site for my Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering: Poetry Night. This promises to be an exciting night. The evening will kick-off with me performing three of my avant-garde jazz pieces.

I will begin the evening with My Mind and Soul: For Solo Tenor Saxophone (Unaccompanied). I recorded My Mind and Soul with Creative Tradition in 2006, on our CD "Do I Have To Live Like This?" (track number 25 - Give Me Back My Mind, poetry by Wardell Montgomery). My Mind and Soul is an interesting piece with a retrograde of octaves and set theory.

At The Hill is an avant-garde jazz composition written in four movements. All four movements have been performed and recorded. I have performed In The Belly Of The Beast (1st movement of At The Hill) with my four piece group and Creative Tradition. Movements three and four have also been performed by Creative Tradition. Teachers is the second movement of At The Hill, and is actually a be-bop piece inside an avant-garde jazz composition. Continuum Jazz Ensemble has recorded "Teachers", but the recording has not been released. Although these movements have been performed separately with other groups, and myself, this performance will be the first time At The Hill: For Jazz/Avant-Garde Solo Tenor Saxophone has been performed with all four movements in order, and unaccompanied.

For Sarah And Sarah is a composition written for my Mom, and my former clarinet student, both of whom share the same name. For Sarah And Sarah is a blues feel piece that has its melody based upon the name "Sarah".

After my performance poet Wardell Montgomery, Jr. will come to the stage and give us a set of his poetry. Wardell Montgomery is an Urban Folk Poet, and you will not want to miss the wit and social commentary Wardell brings to the stage. After Wardell Montgomery, we will open the stage for open mike.

If you are a poet, or you know a poet, the stage will be open for poets to give us enlightenment. Hope you can join us at the Phoenix Cafe, at 8pm, at 24918 John R. Road in Hazel Park, MI.

Post-Bop and Avant-Garde Jazz Saxophonist Keith Gamble: Intermediate Saxophones

Intermediate Saxophones

I have a saxophone student who is advancing very well. My saxophone student is finishing middle school and entering ninth grade in the fall. This young saxophone student started the year as principal saxophonist at his school, and is finishing as principal of his section at the end of the year. During his saxophone lessons this year, my student has been promoted to Level IV of the Michigan Music Teachers Association Student Activities Handbook for woodwinds. Currently, my student is preparing the Gene Paul composition Estilian Caprice, and is doing well with that piece.

Despite my student`s success he is having problems with his instrument. My student plays a King Empire, which is a pretty good horn, but in need of a complete repadding. In other words, this repair is going to be expensive. I spoke with my student`s parents, and they agree it is time to look toward purchasing a new saxophone; an intermediate line instrument.

My student will be ill-served with a student line instrument, but a professional line Selmer (Paris) Series II
Jubilee at well over $6,000.00 for a ninth grade student? So what`s the answer? Purchase an intermediate line instrument. That makes sense, and that is why instrument makers produce them . An intermediate saxophone will greatly serve the needs of an advance middle school/high school saxophone student, and will make a perfect second horn when that high school student becomes a music major
in college, and enters into a professional career as a musician.

For you parents out there purchasing an intermediate line saxophone, I recommend you avoid unknown brands that are priced extremely low. What may seem like the deal of a century today, may be a Nightmare on Elm Street tomorrow. These cheeper instruments have been known to have intonation problems, difficulty finding parts, and many repair professionals simply refuse to repair and service those unknown brands. Intermediate line instruments can sell from $1,500 to over $3,000, so you want to do business with honest people that can tell you the orgins of the instrument you decide to purchase. Make sure to stick with known saxophone manufacturers. Here are a list of known manufacturers to consider:

Yanagisawa
Yamaha
Cannonball
Keilwerth
Selmer La Viox II
P. Muariat
Buffet

My repair professional who service my instruments recommend the Cannonball Sceptyr (Black Nickel). I have another saxophone student who plays a Cannonball alto, and I must say I am impress with Cannonball, but I do recommend investigating the product offerings from the above mentioned saxophone manufactures.

Highlights from the 2012 Keith Gamble - Woodwind Music Lessons Spring Recital

Our 2012 Spring Recital was titled "A Little Spring In Your Step", and it was hosted by my young piano student Lakyra Flowers and her family. We sprung right-in at the International Institute in Detroit, with Lakyra kicking-off the performances.

Lakyra`s performance was a first for me. Our May 27 performance was the first time I have ever accompanied a student by playing a piano duet. That`s right, me, saxophonist Keith Gamble accompanied Lakyra on Comin` Round The Mountain playing piano. Lakyra had an excellent performance, as I may have played one or two off-colored notes, but even with that Lakyra Flowers had a wonderful performance. The standout performance for the day came from my former clarinet student Kenseye Fort, and his friend clarinetist Joshua Pittman. The clarinet duet of Fort and Pittman began with Beethoven`s Aria con Variazioni, playing all four movements and the allegro assai. Next time I`ll have to remind the audience not to clap between movements. Aria con Variazioni was following by Paul Hindemith`s Fugue No. 5 in E (from Ludus Tonalis). This piece was arranged by Kenseye Fort. After Hindemith, the clarinet duet of Fort and Pittman performed Sonata (for two clarinets), by Francis Poulenc.

During the awards and acknowledgements portion of our recital, I presented alto  saxophone student Landon Van Cleave a trophy for participating in the 2012 Michigan Music Teachers Association Student Achievement Test. This was Landon`s second consecutive year participating in the MMTA Student Achievement at Evola Music, in Shelby Township, MI. Congratulations Landon, and a job well done.

I must give thanks to the International Institute in Detroit, MI, all of the students and families who particapated, and a special thanks to Lakyra Flowers and her beautiful mom - Ms. Stubblefield, and the rest of her family for hosting, and preparing a wonderful meal for us all to enjoy.

Keith Gamble - Woodwind Music Lessons 2012 Spring Recital

A Little Spring In Your Step

Put a little spring in your step and come-on down to the International Institute in Detroit for my spring recital, hosted by young pianist Lakyra Flowers, and her family. Our recital will begin at 4pm. The International Institute is located at 111 E. Kirby, Detroit, MI 48202, in the American Room.

Lakyra Flowers has been studying piano with me for just over one year, and has already participated in the Metropolitan Detroit Musicians League Student Recital series, and Student Achievement Test, where the judge in her comments said "Wow"! Our 2012 recital will be Lakyras` second performance with Keith Gamble - Woodwind Music Lessons. Young pianist Lakyra will perform a piece from composer Catherine Rollin, and Lakyra and I will play a piano duet together.

Also performing on the program is my former clarinet student Kenseye Fort. That`s right, I said former. I am sad to say that, but for selfish reasons. Kenseye was a wonderful student who was teaching me as much as I was teaching him. I greatly enjoyed the caliber music exercises and solo pieces Kenseye was playing, and I was fill with pride to say "Kenseye is a clarinet student of mine". As all teachers know, at some point we have to let go. However, I am also filled with joy seeing Kenseye Fort blossoming as a fine clarinetist, and respected musician, and human being. At the recital Kenseye will perform the works of Beethoven, Hindemith, and Poulenc. Joining Kenseye Fort will be clarinetist Joshua Pittman.

Our May 27, 2012 recital is going to be a wonderful display of music, and I urge all to attend.

Keith Gamble`s Art House Gatherings

Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering? what is that! you may be asking. For 2012, I am starting an arts series of those things I love and enjoy. That`s right - I! Many of you (if not all) may be saying "who the hell are you?" I can understand that, but my answer to that question is I am my Mother`s son, and a believer of God who accepts Jesus as his savior; that`s who I am, and by the way - I`m a jazz saxophonist. Keith Gamble`s Art House Gatherings are going to be get-togethers where we eat, play and listen to music, drink coffee, and partake in the featured artistic event that has been planned. My gatherings will take place tri-annually: March, July, and November, with each gathering having a specific theme and activity.

Some of my gatherings will focus on one of my music students, or former students involved in the arts or humanities. Other gatherings will simply feature me in  post-bop/avant-garde jazz performance, with CDs for sell.

My first Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2012, at the Phoenix Cafe in Hazel Park, MI, at 8pm. This gathering is called "Bird", and will be celebrating the music of Charlie "Bird" Parker. This gathering celebrating  Charlie Parker will include coffee and cake, me playing pieces from Charlie Parker, the Clint Eastwood film "Bird", and a jam session following the movie. All this for only $6.00 at the door.

If you are interested in Charlie Parker check-out my October 11, 2011 blog called African American Art and Culture: The art music of Charlie Parker. That blog should give you some information on Charlie Parker, and hopefully motivate you to research Charlie Parker, and the bebop era. I hope to see you at my very first Keith Gamble`s Art House Gathering.

Adult learners of music

Many times in social settings when the discussion turns to - what do you do for a living? Of course my response is "I am a musician and independent music teacher". What follows are comments such as "I use to play the ...", or "I would love to play the ..., but am I too old to learn to the ...?" No! one is never too old to learn to play an instrument. I once had a violin student who was in her 80`s, and the joy she experienced learning and playing is one of the highlights in my career.

Currently I have adult students playing clarinet, flute, and saxophone. I registered a new adult flute student from my New Years Day perfromance with vocalist Janice Simon at St. Patrick Catholic Church, in Detroit. Many adults are truly interested. I have found adult learners take-up playing an instrument for their enjoyment and relaxation, but there are also adult students taking music lessons to enter into a career in music.

So adult, whether you are looking to take recreational music making (RMM), or music lessons to play on stage as an amateur or professional musician, it is never too late to take lessons.
